Chapter Forty-Eight
Summary
- Hunt is in a standoff with Sabine, each of them having a gun pointed at the other's ally - Sabine's gun is on Bryce and Hunt's is on Sabine.
- Bryce obediently follows Sabine's command while Hunt struggles with the split-second decision about whether he could dodge a bullet versus saving Bryce from one.
- Bryce confronts Sabine about her demon accomplice and the absence of the legion, deducing that the surveillance cameras have been manipulated to repeat harmless footage.
- Though threatened by Sabine, Hunt attempts to use his armored battle-suit to shield Bryce's chest, knowing a direct shot would be fatal for her.
- Bryce then accuses Sabine of killing Danika, her own daughter, to maintain her position as future Prime, using her demon to eliminate anyone who could identify her, and to embarrass Micah before an upcoming summit.
- Despite all the evidence and accusations pointing to her, Sabine fervently denies any connection to the theft and the killing, while revealing Danika was the actual thief who stole the Horn to protect her.
- Hunt, although skeptical of Sabine's defense, continues to keep his guard up and refuses to lower his weapon or release his grip on Bryce.
