Chapter Thirty-Eight
Summary
- Hunt and Bryce discuss the possibility that Sabine could be behind the recent crimes because of evidence that connects her to the case. They think she may be hiding a demon and orchestrating events from the shadows.
- Sabine's recorded comments about Danika, Bryce's previous college roommate, strengthen their suspicions. The recording reveals Sabine spoke negatively about Danika, claiming she couldn't keep her mouth shut and that this led to her downfall.
- Hunt suggests that Danika may have been killed by Sabine to keep her quiet about the theft of the mysterious artifact known as the Horn.
- However, Bryce brings up the point that Sabine could be summoning creatures without the Horn. Two years have passed from the time Danika could have seen something to now, so confusion arises about why Sabine would start doing evil deeds now after waiting for two years.
- Hunt brings up the possibility of Sabine trying to undermine Micah or even colluding with Sandriel, to weaken Micah's position in the eyes of the powerful Asteri, perhaps to usurp his position or gain more power.
- Bryce refutes this idea, speaking to Sabine's petty nature and smaller focus. Hunt and Bryce agree though to continue investigating with Sabine as a suspect and to try to catch her in the act.
- Bryce goes for a run to process this information despite the late hour and Hunt accompanies her despite her protests of wanting to run alone.
- Bryce struggles with coming to terms with the potential involvement of Sabine, a person she knew, in Danika's murder. She runs hard and long despite leg pain until she is barely limping back to her apartment.
- Back at her apartment, Hunt expresses concern about her leg, but Bryce brushes him off and thanks him for his company during her run.
