Chapter Forty-One
Summary
- It's raining which makes it challenging for Hunt and Bryce to find the scent of the demon terrorizing the city.
- Bryce tries to get her pet chimera, Syrinx, out in the rain failing which, Hunt uses his powers to lift the chimera and hand him over to Bryce.
- Despite a strained thigh, Bryce insists on going out to investigate more. They reach the Rose Gate, a significant location in the city, heavily decorated with flowers and plants and a tourist hotspot during normal hours. However, the heavy rainfall made it devoid of activity and potential witnesses to the demon's presence.
- Hunt and Bryce consider whether the demon has left the city after which Hunt mentions that all city sewers ultimately lead to the Istros, suggesting that the demon or its summoner may be hiding there.
- They decide to investigate in the sewers but don’t find sufficient weapons and Hunt worries about the danger of using his lightning power over the water in the sewer, he suggests seeking information from a contact in Many Waters instead, since a river is a plausible place for disposing of a corpse.
- Bryce insists on going to the docks, but Hunt tells her that it’s not safe at night, and it would be better to wait until daylight.
- Back at home, Hunt finds a box of colorful sparkling toy unicorns in Bryce's linen closet. Bryce explains that she has kept the toys from her childhood as they make her happy and helped her gain acceptance among other kids while growing up.
- The conversation ends with Bryce poking fun at Hunt's curiosity for what he thought were sex toys and mentioning she keeps her vibrators in her nightstand. The chapter concludes with a playful exchange between the two.
