Chapter Ninety-Six
Summary
- Rigelus, the most powerful of the ruling Asteri, calls Bryce to recognize and thank her for her actions that day. Rigelus assures her their gratitude runs so deep they've granted her a favour.
- Upon entering the room, Bryce sees Hunt's slave mark covered by a 'C', symbolising the favour; his freedom from being a slave of the Governor. Hunt's reaction to his freedom isn't one of joy, it's more of relief.
- Rigelus passes the message that they'd rather Bryce and Hunt remain in the city living peacefully using her ancestors' gifts for joy and never to use the Horn.
- Upon asking after Governor Micah, Rigelus blames Micah for attempting to destroy innocent lives and Sandriel for losing control of her slaves.
- Rigelus warns of severe consequences if the events known to select few are publicly announced.
- Bryce and Hunt decode that they are expected to live quietly without exposing any supernatural abilities or they, along with their loved ones, will be killed.
- Rigelus also claims their responsibility for the destruction of Lunathion because Sandriel misled them into believing the city was evacuated before the Asterian Guard was sent to eliminate the demon infestation.
- Hunt supports Bryce; they decide to stick together and visit an overwhelmed Isaiah at the Comitium.
- Bryce's friends, Fury and Ruhn, reunite after the incident. Fury appreciates Bryce and Hunt's bravery and leaves to check on a safe Juniper. Ruhn expresses his relief at Bryce's survival and acknowledges he misunderstood her potential, showing remorse.
- Bryce and Ruhn also discuss their ancient starlight gifts and how they need to be cautious manoeuvring any attention. Ruhn warns of the impending meeting with the Autumn King. Its revealed that Ruhn can telepathically communicate.
- Bryce realizes she's not the Shadow of Death anymore.
