Chapter Three
Summary
- Bryce comes home from work to discover her apartment occupied by Danika's pack, who consider Bryce one of their own despite her lack of a tattoo marking her as such.
- After discussing a recent sunball game, Bryce inquires about the "Briggs meeting" that she wasn't informed about, referring to Briggs being released by the Autumn King due to a legal loophole.
- Bryce then discovers Danika has been upset by news of two research students getting killed during a blackout — considered her responsibility as it happened in her shift and her section. Sabine publicly chastised Danika for this incident.
- Feeling guilty and stressed, Danika expresses frustration over having been nearby but unaware of the students being killed.
- Before going on a date, Bryce reflects on her dissatisfaction regarding her present boyfriend. He is "human, okay-at-sex Reid," though she admits to herself that his sexual performance isn't great.
- Lastly, Connor, a member of Danika's pack who Bryce has a complicated relationship with, tries to ask Bryce out, but she declines saying, “I don't date wolves”.
- The chapter features an exchange between Bryce Quinlan and Connor, as he attempts to ask her out on a date. Bryce, however, rejects his advances, asserting her independence and wanting to avoid more masculine influence in her life.
- Bryce has issues with her Fae father, who was domineering and possessive towards her mother, Ember Quinlan. She fears his influence with Emma, but it's mentioned that Bryce has taken on more than her father's red hair and pointed ears. She will live for centuries, long after her human mother dies.
- Bryce and Connor share platonic meals when their common friend Danika is away. Connor suggests a meal together to test the waters for a potential romantic relationship, but Bryce laughs away this proposal.
- Bryce chats with Danika, who has come back from a traumatic ordeal with a figure named Sabine. Despite the tension, Danika hints at their long history and deep friendship by telling Bryce she loves her.
- Bryce contemplates brushing off a date with Reid to watch comedies and eat ice cream with Danika. She considers seeking revenge on Sabine through her assassin friend, Fury, but ultimately decides against it.
- Bryce's thoughts on her diverse group of friends provide insight into her character. She's independent, averse to accepting help from her abusive Fae father, and determined to stick it out on her own, despite the struggles.
- The chapter ends with Bryce walking through the bustling Crescent City streets at night, fully immersed in the city's essence and vibrancy, revealing her deep connection to her surroundings.
