Chapter Ten
Summary
- The chapter is set in an art gallery where Bryce, a half-fae woman, is dealing with an arrogant Fae couple. As the gallery's staff, she's trying to sell them a piece of ancient artwork.
- She reflects on her heritage and half-brother Ruhn's future wife selection due to their royal lineage. Bryce herself has managed to avoid such situations due to her half-Fae status.
- When the couple leaves, there is an unexpected visit from Hunt Athalar and Commander Isaiah from the 33rd Legion. They question Bryce about an incident from the night before involving Maximus Tertian, a man she met and who died later in the night. His murder was identical to the murder of Danika Fendyr's pack from two years ago. Bryce had been one of the last individuals to see him alive.
- Hunt and Isaiah inform Bryce that the Governor of their legion is on his way to the gallery. She calls her boss, Jesiba, to inform her about the developments, including that Tertian's death is similar to Fendyr’s pack's, implying that Philip Briggs, the one accused of their murders, might not be the murderer.
- The chapter reveals that Bryce and Fendyr’s pack were killed similarly. Bryce's boss, Jesiba, is surprised by the revelation and the chapter ends with Bryce feeling scared for the consequences.
- The demon that had been wreaking havoc was locked away by Briggs two years ago and hasn't been seen since. Bryce finds consolation in this as the one who destroyed her world is in jail.
- Jesiba and Bryce discuss a potential visit from the Governor. Jesiba needs to make phone calls before he arrives to avoid any issues with Maximus's father, who may blame Bryce for his son's death.
- Bryce tells Lehabah, a fire sprite, to return to her post and keep quiet after hearing a tapping sound on the door of the iron archives.
- Jesiba inquires about the arrival of Micah, to which Bryce indicates is in eight minutes. Despite the urgency of a client's death, Jesiba doesn't demand more time, possibly out of respect for the Archangel or empathy towards the murder of Danika.
- Jesiba instructs Bryce to ensure everything is on lockdown before her phone call ends. Bryce reassures her she has it under control and sets in motion once the call ends.
