Chapter Twenty-Seven
Summary
- Hunt and Bryce leave the wreckage of The White Raven and head to Bryce's apartment. Hunt notices Bryce's exhaustion and emotional exhaustion, while Bryce makes it clear she wants to be left alone.
- Upon reaching her apartment, they discover Bryce has lost her keys in the blast. The doorman, Marrin, supplies a spare after convincing Bryce is safe with Hunt.
- Once inside the apartment, Hunt tries to convince Bryce to accept magical healing, known as 'the Drop', but she refuses. She tells him she was meant to do it with her deceased friend, Danika.
- Hunt apologises for previously suspecting Bryce was a part of the conspiracy they're investigating and for judging her for her party lifestyle. Bryce rebuffs his judgement, arguing there's nothing wrong with enjoying life. Hunt also reveals a deal he made with Micah, promising to 'make up' over two thousand lives lost under his command in exchange for his freedom.
- Bryce shows Hunt to the guest room and he brings back a meal of burgers, cheese fries, and a milkshake for them. Bryce admits she needs to find who was responsible for the bomb at the club to alleviate her own grief.
- Inside the guest room, Hunt finds a photo of Bryce's parents and herself as a child, and a photo of Bryce and Danika sitting in the desert, with Bryce heavily bruised and a wolf family heirloom sword, which was found missing after Danika's death, lying beside them.
- The chapter ends with Hunt falling asleep, leaving the aftermath of the bomb and their ongoing investigation to be continued in the next chapter.
