Chapter Sixty-Six
Summary
- Bryce joins Hunt on a boat, soaking wet and unsure of how she got there. Guns point at her, but she does not notice. She only beholds Hunt and his party and their shock at her immediate arrival.
- Tharion declares the Viper Queen under arrest on behalf of the River Queen. The Viper Queen chuckles in response.
- A cold voice behind Bryce reveals it is just as it appears and is followed by the landing of Micah and nine other angels. Instead of disarming the Viper Queen, they instead arm themselves against Hunt and his party.
- The Viper Queen mocks Micah, declaring he owes her a favor. The angels, Viktoria and Justinian, realize they've been set up.
- According to the Viper Queen, Hunt, Viktoria, and Justinian saw the synth, a powerful substance, as a way to regain their power and overthrow their masters. Bryce refuses to believe this until she sees the pain in Hunt’s eyes.
- Micah confirms the Viper Queen's description. The three knew of the synth and wanted to use it to finish what Shahar started on Mount Hermon.
- Bryce learns that Hunt knew about the synth days ago. Danika sold it, leading them to the synth, and was addicted to it. Bryce learns Danika used the synth the night she died, overdosed and subsequently killed her own pack and herself in a violent frenzy. Bryce blames Hunt for knowing this information and keeping it secret.
- Fury Axtar interrupts before Bryce can get any more information. She threatens to kill Hunt if he moves. Fury forces the Viper Queen to move out of sight.
- Micah says that Danika was also involved in theft of the synth trials from Redner's lab. Bryce learns that Danika summoned the dangerous Krisallos creatures due to the synth's side effects.
- Hunt is arrested and placed under shackles. Fury Axtar hopes to protect Bryce from ever seeing or being bothered by the cuffed group again. Micah and Isaiah take Hunt away. Bryce, broken-hearted, leaves with Fury and Tharion on the skimmer, ignoring Hunt’s pleading.
