Chapter Six
Summary
- Chapter 6 of the book starts with Isaiah Tiberian observing a half-Fae, half-human female named Bryce Quinlan who is being held in a detention center. She appears to be in shock and hasn't spoken since being brought in.
- Isaiah and Hunt Athalar found Bryce in an alley with a serious injury. She seemed to be in a state of shock or terror and was potentially under the influence of drugs.
- Bryce is viewed as a source of information about a recent attack, but she is also considered to be a danger to herself. Despite this, she is being considered as a witness, not a suspect.
- Hunt Athalar questions whether there has been any change in Bryce's state, but Isaiah notes that she still hasn't spoken.
- Throughout the chapter, there are hints about a past shared by Isaiah and Hunt, including references to an angelic rebellion and the consequences they faced for their roles in it.
- Isaiah and Hunt discuss a woman named Sabine, whom they're expecting to arrive soon. When Sabine does arrive, she is outraged and demands that Bryce be interrogated thoroughly and harshly.
- During the interrogation, Bryce remains silent even as information about her is revealed, including her drug use and previous encounters with law enforcement.
- The chapter concludes with mentions of Bryce's other friends, including Juniper Andromeda and Fury Axtar, the latter being a notorious mercenary.
- The chapter takes place in an interrogation room, where a woman named Bryce has just snorted a substance called lightseeker. She is laughing and interacting with the camera, showing a message from someone named Danika who is upset that Bryce is doing lightseeker without her.
- Bryce then leaves the room when a woman named Viktoria begins reading messages that Danika had sent to her after her departure. The messages become increasingly worried, as Danika is unable to reach Bryce after some time.
- Bryce's reactions indicate that she is becoming increasingly distressed by the situation and the messages. When Viktoria plays audio from a hall camera, which records the sound of Danika screaming and begging for mercy, Bryce is emotionally overwhelmed and violently reacts by destroying the room and vomiting repeatedly. Bryce is then removed from the room and taken away.
- During this time, Hunt and Isaiah discuss the events and imply that this incident may have something to do with a murder involving Danika and a demon. They suggest that Bryce could be involved or a target, as people close to Danika have been found dead. Hunt and Isaiah are focused on finding a man named Briggs who they believe might be connected to the demon.
- Bryce is then released following an intervention by a man named Ruhn Danaan, a high-ranking Fae individual and distant cousin to Bryce, who demands her release. Hunt and Isaiah agree, but decide to implant a tracking device in Bryce that will last for three days.
- The chapter ends with Hunt and Isaiah determining that if they find the demon, they must ensure it is no longer a threat. Isaiah also warns Hunt that if Bryce is wise, she will avoid attracting the attention of other powerful immortals.
