Chapter Ninety-Seven
Contains spoilersOverview
At dawn, Bryce chooses to move forward. She answers Connor’s final message by declaring she is home, deletes his and Danika’s threads, and receives a brief gift from the Under-King: a glimpse of fallen friends. She returns to Hunt, embracing hope as the city prepares for new leadership and rebuilding.
Summary
After an all-night effort to stabilize the city, Hunt remains at the Comitium barracks and assigns Naomi to watch Bryce’s apartment. At sunrise, Bryce walks Syrinx along the Istros, thinking of the looming reorganization, Sailings, and the Asteri’s pending choice of Valbara’s next Archangel. She notes Hunt’s freedom from death bargains and his undecided future in the triarii.
By the river, Bryce recalls Tharion’s promise of the River Queen’s support and how the House of Many Waters and shifters saved citizens, while the Fae sealed themselves off and suffered least. Seeking normalcy, she messages Juniper to confirm she’ll return to dance class.
As the light grows, Bryce rereads Danika’s and Connor’s final messages. She finally replies to Connor’s last request—telling him she’s home—and then deletes both threads, deliberately releasing the grief that has anchored her for two years.
The Bone Quarter mists briefly part, revealing a sunlit, green shore and six near-invisible figures, a gift from the Under-King. Bryce recognizes loved ones among them and blows a kiss before the vision closes, offering her closure and peace.
Hunt texts that he’s home and making breakfast. Bryce, buoyed by the vision and her choice to let go, hurries back with Syrinx, ready to embrace joy and the road ahead as the city rebuilds.
