Catch-22 — Joseph Heller

Catch-22 is a satirical novel by Joseph Heller that follows the story of Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier, and his experiences in World War II. The novel is set in Italy and on the fictional island of Pianosa and follows Yossarian's efforts to avoid being sent back into combat as he becomes increasingly disillusioned with the military and the war. The novel is known for its dark humor and its portrayal of the absurdities of war and bureaucracy. Throughout the book, Yossarian encounters a number of eccentric characters, including his comrades in arms, his superiors, and the inhabitants of Pianosa, and becomes embroiled in various schemes and plots as he tries to stay alive. The novel's title refers to a particular clause in military regulations that states that a person is considered insane if they willingly continue to fly dangerous combat missions, but is also deemed sane if they request to be removed from duty due to their own insanity. This catch-22 situation highlights the absurdity and madness of war.
