Chapter 18: The Soldier Who Saw Everything Twice

Yossarian agrees to this request. The family leaves and Yossarian is moved to a new ward. He finds the ward to be filled with soldiers who have lost a limb. Yossarian becomes fascinated by the stump of one soldier in particular, which has a sock on it. Yossarian asks the soldier, whose name is Kid Sampson, why he has a sock on his stump. Kid Sampson tells him that the sock helps to keep the stump warm. Yossarian finds this to be amusing and starts laughing. Kid Sampson becomes upset and tells Yossarian that it is not funny to have lost a limb. Yossarian apologizes and they have a heartfelt conversation about their experiences in the war. Yossarian finds Kid Sampson to be a brave and courageous man. He decides that he wants to be like Kid Sampson and not let the war defeat him.
