Chapter 35: Milo the Militant
In Chapter 35 of Catch-22, Milo meets with Colonel Cathcart and tries to persuade him to let him go on more dangerous combat missions. However, Colonel Cathcart is impressed by Milo's logical traps and instead decides that Milo is the only person capable of running his syndicate, and forbids him from going on any more combat missions. He even suggests that other men go on Milo's missions instead, and that Milo would be given any medals won in the process. To make this plan possible, Colonel Cathcart increases the number of required missions for each man to eighty. The next morning, a mission is launched that ends up being very deadly, with Nately and Dobbs among the twelve men killed.
