Chapter 8: Lieutenant Scheisskopf
Clevinger, who generally understands everything about the war except for its random nature, is unable to comprehend Milo's plan. Yossarian remembers training with Clevinger in America under Lieutenant Scheisskopf, who was obsessed with parades and whose wife and her friend slept with everyone under her husband's command. Lieutenant Scheisskopf hates Clevinger and gets him sent to trial under a hostile colonel, where Clevinger is unable to convey his innocence due to being harassed about using incorrect modes of address. Clevinger is confused by the fact that his superiors hate him more than any enemy could.
