Chapter 7: McWatt

Yossarian's pilot, McWatt, is able to seem cheerful despite the war, leading Yossarian to believe that he is the unit's "craziest combat man."

Yossarian receives a letter from Doc Daneeka about his liver and is told to eat fresh fruit, but he worries that his liver will improve and he will have to leave the hospital, so he refuses to eat the fruit. Milo tries to convince him to sell the fruit on the black market, but Yossarian refuses. Milo is concerned about his chef, Corporal Snark, who once poisoned an entire squadron by mixing soap into the sweet potatoes.

Milo is indignant when he learns that a C.I.D. man is looking for a criminal who has been forging the name of Washington Irving in censored letters, believing it is a ploy to accuse him of putting items on the black market. Milo tries to explain his idea of organizing the men into a syndicate by tearing up a bedsheet and redistributing the pieces, but Yossarian does not understand his economic philosophy, which involves cheating those he trades with while claiming moral superiority.
