Chapter 40: Catch-22

Yossarian wakes up in a hospital to find out that he has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the crime of being absent without leave. He is also informed that Nately's prostitute has been sentenced to death. He tries to escape, but is caught and brought back to the hospital. Yossarian becomes very depressed and decides that he does not want to live anymore. He tries to kill himself by overdosing on pills, but is unsuccessful. He eventually recovers and is released from the hospital. He meets up with Milo and discovers that he has become very wealthy from his illegal tobacco business. Yossarian decides to leave Pianosa and go home. He says goodbye to his friends and boards a plane, feeling relieved to finally be going home.
