Contains spoilersOverview
Blackballed by Ari, Evelyn is sidelined during the 1960 Oscars while Celia wins Best Supporting Actress and publicly thanks her. The lovers celebrate in secret but decide not to live together to protect Celia’s career. After further career setbacks, Evelyn resolves to reinvent herself by going to Paris.
Summary
Ari Sullivan cuts Evelyn Hugo from Sunset productions and begins loaning her out, leading to two poorly received romantic comedies that further damage her marketability. As the 1960 Academy Awards approach, Evelyn is persona non grata. Harry Cameron calls to offer himself as her date, but Evelyn declines to protect Harry’s reputation.
At Celia St. James’s apartment before the ceremony, Celia frets about her chances while Evelyn reassures her. They exchange sincere declarations of love but agree to keep their relationship hidden, and Evelyn leaves before hair and makeup arrive to avoid suspicion.
Watching alone at home, Evelyn drinks and sinks into self-pity until Celia is announced as Best Supporting Actress for Little Women. Overcome, Evelyn kisses the TV and chips her tooth as Celia thanks Ari, Harry, her team, her castmates, and Evelyn by name. Later that night, Celia skips the studio party and arrives at Evelyn’s house with the Oscar to celebrate privately; they reaffirm their bond and make love.
Despite their joy, Evelyn refuses to risk Celia’s flourishing career by living together, and she contends with loneliness. Professionally, Evelyn’s two films flop, while Celia’s new romance is a hit, Don Adler’s thriller succeeds, and Ruby Reilly earns glowing reviews.
Seeking a way forward, Evelyn sees Breathless, is inspired, and immediately calls Harry with a new plan: she is going to Paris.
