Chapter 7
Contains spoilersOverview
Evelyn pauses their sessions for a dinner engagement, and she and Monique plan to resume the next day. At home, Monique confronts her loneliness after separating from David and agrees to her mother’s visit. She suspects Evelyn used Vivant to target her specifically. They reconvene, ready to continue the biography.
Summary
Grace reminds Evelyn of a dinner with Ronnie Beelman, prompting Evelyn to end the day’s interview and schedule the next session for the same time tomorrow. As they walk out, Evelyn checks that Monique can shape the material into a story; Monique asserts confidence, and they part.
Back home, Monique fields a call from her mother, who gently probes how Monique is coping without David. Monique recalls her mother’s early doubts about the relationship, the later supportive engagement response, and her current ambivalence. Seeking comfort and company, Monique agrees to her mother’s proposed visit in two weeks, accepting the trade-off of support for scrutiny.
Monique’s mother mentions a package of Monique’s father’s photos and presses for details about Evelyn. Monique explains that Evelyn wants a full biography, not a Vivant piece, and voices a new suspicion: Evelyn may have used Vivant to reach Monique specifically. Though uncertain about Evelyn’s motives, Monique recognizes she is more intrigued than worried, promising her mother the “juicy stuff.”
The next day, Monique returns to Evelyn’s home office. With Grace’s muffins and coffee on the table, Monique sets the recorder, and Evelyn signals readiness to continue, positioning them to dive deeper into Evelyn’s life story.
