Chapter 49
Summary
- The chapter starts with a Max and the narrator sitting in the courtyard of a mansion owned by the head of Paramount. Max's limo pulls up and offers to give the narrator a ride back to their hotel.
- They decide to get food and end up at a Jack in the Box. When they go inside, the cashier and patrons recognize the narrator as Evelyn Hugo, a renowned figure.
- Evelyn playfully denies her identity but still signs autographs, menus and paper hats. However, the crowd becomes overwhelming and more people keep wanting her attention.
- Max intervenes, picks up Evelyn, and manages to carry her out of the restaurant amidst the frenzy. Inside the limo, Max confesses that he is in love with Evelyn and kisses her, which awakens deep feelings in her.
- The next morning Evelyn wakes up as an Oscar winner with her six-year-old child Connor eating room service in her bed. She receives a delivery of two-dozen red roses with a note from Max confessing his long-standing love for her and asking her to marry him.
