Summary
- In 1960, Kya and Tate continue their whimsical relationship. Tate brings Kya a birthday cake and gifts, having learned her birthday from her bible. Kya is touched because no one has celebrated her birthday since her mother left. Tate's gifts include a magnifying glass, a hair clasp and art supplies.
- Tate starts to work alongside his father Scupper. They clean up a boat and eat dinner together. Scupper asks Tate about his lack of social activities and especially about any romantic relationships. When rumors about Tate and Kya arise, Scupper cautions his son without explicitly being judgmental. An argument ensues but they end the evening on a positive note, with Scupper expressing his pride in Tate's achievements.
- Tate continues to help Kya with her reading and learning. He brings her new books on biology and other topics. Kya struggles to understand why a mother would abandon her children.
- Few days before Christmas, Tate gifts Kya a dictionary. He can't visit her on Christmas Day but promises to see her soon. On the other hand, Kya is upset about missing her opportunity to give a gift. On Tate's next visit, she gives him a small gift and they enjoy a leftover Christmas meal together, which leads to a sexual encounter.
- In spring, Kya and Tate's relationship becomes more physically intense. Tate often holds back out of respect for Kya's youth and innocence. Kya, however, wishes to further their physical relationship. Despite the mutual desire, Tate refrains from advancing their relationship due to Kya's age and the potential for complications.
- Tate announces he is leaving for college and a summer job sooner than expected. Kya is saddened by this news and runs into the woods out of denial. Tate promises he will return. However, when he visits Kya again to say goodbye, he leaves her some books and assures her of his return - Kya has her doubts.
