17. Crossing the Threshold
Summary
- The year is 1960, and during that summer, the local store owner, Jumpin', warns Kya that men have been asking questions about her. He thinks they may be from Social Services trying to find out about her well-being and if she is attending school.
- Fearing that she'll be taken away and put into foster care, Kya discusses with her friend Tate about meeting at a different location to continue their reading lessons. She suggests an abandoned cabin in the marsh, away from prying eyes.
- Kya comes into puberty and experiences her first period. She is initially scared but is comforted and guided by a local woman, Mabel.
- Kya also receives a beautiful peach-colored dress from Mabel, which makes her feel special.
- Kya continues to learn and takes an interest in the poetry in books Tate brings. She writes her own poems, finding it a fun and comforting activity.
- This chapter also highlights their gradual physical and emotional closeness. During one of their lessons at the cabin, Kya invites Tate into her home for the first time since her father left the shack. On another occasion, Kya finds herself growing attracted to Tate.
- Kya questions Tate about his motivations for helping her and asks if he has a girlfriend. He explains that he likes being with her and they both feel a deep connection.
- Their friendship develops into a romantic relationship when Tate eventually kisses Kya amongst falling autumn leaves. This is Kya's first romantic experience.
