41. A Small Herd
Summary
- Kya is on the run from Chase, her ex, who had abused her physically and emotionally.
- She is fearful, expecting Chase to track her down, and unable to ask for help because she believes that the locals would not defend her and the law would not believe her.
- Surrounded by wind noise, she makes her way to a secluded reading cabin which is slightly out-of-place but still serves as a good hideaway.
- Despite the cabin's relative safety, she feels trapped and remains constantly alert.
- She notices a herd of deer near her hideout, wishing to belong like they do, but the herd slowly backs away after sensing danger.
- Kya grows tired due to the constant surveillance and stress, returning to the cabin only to indulge in mindless eating, touching her bruises, and reflecting on her bruised self-esteem.
- She sleeps inside the cabin but wakes up often out of fear of Chase finding her.
- The next morning, she wakes up with the realisation of why her mother had left her home because of the same threats of abuse. Kya swears to never endure a life full of fear like her mother.
- She avoids going to Jumpin’s for supplies out of fear that Chase might see her and doesn't want anyone else to see her battered face.
- While observing a female praying mantis eating its mate, Kya contemplates about the strength of female insects and how they deal with their lovers.
- In spite of her swollen face and the bruises, she takes a boat into the marsh after a few days, constantly on alert for Chase.
