Chapter 35: The Smell of Failure
Overview
Elizabeth’s casual rowing advice mobilizes women nationwide and annoys Dr. Mason as public backlash intensifies into picketing and threats. Six-Thirty sneaks into KCTV, becomes part of the show, and detects a nitroglycerin device in a viewer’s handbag, averting disaster. Security receives the praise while Walter recognizes his missteps and the dog’s real value.
Summary
Before dawn, Elizabeth arrives at the boathouse to find it overrun by women inspired by her show. Dr. Mason confronts Elizabeth for igniting interest without warning, then watches as his wife Betsy eagerly tries an erg. Elizabeth apologizes yet notes the upside: women are finally taking up rowing.
At KCTV, picketers denounce Elizabeth for atheism. Walter warns her about public backlash but conceals the escalating death threats, reassured by police who dismiss them as harmless. Meanwhile, Six-Thirty worries about a recurring nonclapper in the audience and decides to investigate.
Six-Thirty hitchhikes to the studio, fakes heatstroke to get past security, and reunites with Elizabeth. When Seymour Browne mentions a prior visit by Madeline and Harriet, Walter covers with a lie about a school assignment. Elizabeth, determined not to be seen as a performer by her daughter, nonetheless pitches adding Six-Thirty to the show, and Walter agrees. The dog debuts the next day and quickly becomes a favorite.
During a live potato segment, Six-Thirty scans the audience, locates the nonclapper, and detects the faint scent of nitroglycerin in her handbag. Overcoming fear from bomb-detection memories, he removes the bag and deposits it at security.
Seymour discovers the device and alerts police. A reporter arrives as officers identify the culprit as a known McCarthyist who has been sending threats. Walter publicly hails Seymour as a hero and, when asked about the dog’s role on a cooking show, says the dog does nothing. Exhausted, Six-Thirty watches as credit goes elsewhere and Walter realizes the injustice.
