Chapter 44: The Acorn
Overview
Avery Parker explains how a corrupt bishop told her Calvin was dead, prompting years of misplaced memorial funding that inadvertently shaped Calvin’s path. Seeing Calvin on Chemistry Today, she wrote to him repeatedly but never met him. Misunderstandings from his funeral are cleared as Elizabeth declares her love and breaks down, forging a fragile reconciliation.
Summary
Shocked by Avery Parker’s claim to be Calvin’s mother, Elizabeth cites Calvin’s diary saying his mother died in childbirth. Avery explains she sent Wilson to All Saints when she learned Calvin might be alive, but the bishop falsely claimed Calvin had died, leading her to fund a memorial—effectively burying him in life and memory.
Wracked with guilt and anger at the church her family supported, Avery redirected memorial funds toward science and exercise, including rowing to honor Calvin’s athletic father. Unknowingly, this helped cultivate Calvin’s rowing, which later enabled his Cambridge scholarship. Six-Thirty comforts Avery as she wrestles with responsibility and loss.
Years later, Chemistry Today’s cover revealed Calvin was alive; Avery cut off the corrupt funding and wrote multiple letters offering support. Fearing scandal and wanting to move slowly, she never confronted him directly, a patience she now regrets.
Following Calvin’s work led Avery’s team to Hastings, where Donatti tried to block funding for Elizabeth. Wilson planned a clandestine meeting, but Calvin’s death intervened. Believing the relationship had been one-sided and unaware Elizabeth was fired and pregnant, Avery attended the funeral from afar and misread Elizabeth’s early departure as indifference.
Elizabeth corrects the record, proclaiming her deep love for Calvin and the genuine “chemistry” they shared. Overcome by grief, she weeps on Avery’s shoulder, and the two women begin to bridge years of misunderstanding and regret.
