Chapter 45: Supper at Six
Overview
Avery Parker comforts Elizabeth and explains that Madeline’s letter to Wilson enabled investigators to uncover Calvin’s adoption trail. She confirms Calvin’s biological father died of tuberculosis and shows proof. Avery and Elizabeth formally embrace each other as family and plan supper together. After Wilson departs, Elizabeth recommits to abiogenesis research with Six-Thirty.
Summary
In the lab, Avery Parker holds a shaken Elizabeth, recognizing her grief. Avery reveals that a letter from Madeline to Wilson about a family tree led a private investigator to unseal Calvin’s adoption history. She shows her faked death certificate from the unwed mothers home, proving the bishop’s deception sparked everything.
Elizabeth asks about Calvin’s biological father. Avery provides a real death certificate: he died of tuberculosis before Calvin’s birth. A photo shows the father’s striking resemblance to Calvin. Avery recalls meeting him by a bike accident, their brief romance, and the brooch he gave her, anchoring the past in tangible keepsakes.
They share why meeting in the lab matters: it is where Elizabeth and Calvin met. Avery expresses a wish to be part of Elizabeth’s family; Elizabeth agrees, explaining that on Madeline’s tree Avery is the “acorn,” not Wilson. Wilson enters to hurry Avery for foundation business and notes they leave tomorrow; Elizabeth invites everyone to supper at six to gather the whole family.
After Wilson and Avery exit, Elizabeth asks Six-Thirty when he knew; the dog privately thinks “at 2:41.” Six-Thirty fetches a fresh notebook, and Elizabeth, taking his pencil, turns to a new first page. She states the project: “Abiogenesis,” signaling her renewed commitment to research.
