III: Unfair Games — Chapter 5
Contains spoilersOverview
Sadie ends her relationship with Dov and relocates to Los Angeles, joining Sam, Marx, and Zoe to open a Venice office and advance Both Sides. On the eve of Sam’s foot amputation, he and Sadie reaffirm their bond. A flashback reveals Anna’s degrading TV job and the car crash that killed her and injured Sam, contextualizing his trauma.
Summary
Sadie prepares to leave Boston when Dov returns and confronts her. He lashes out, cuffs her to the bed, and oscillates between insults and apologies. Sadie calls Sam, discusses their new game, then finishes packing. Dov drives her to the airport, ranting about Los Angeles before confessing his love; Sadie departs anyway.
In L.A., Zoe and Marx collect Sadie and take her to the new Abbot Kinney office. Sam greets her, and despite a difficult spiral staircase, he insists on seeing the roof. On the climb they trade game ideas, rekindling creative rapport. The ocean’s nearness and the clean space leave Sadie hopeful that Both Sides will surpass Ichigo and that California will be a new beginning.
That night in K-town, Sadie and Sam play Donkey Kong at Dong and Bong’s pizzeria, then go to the hospital where Sam’s amputation is scheduled for morning. Posing as Sam’s wife to gain access, Sadie gives him her childhood community service record and a crystal heart paperweight, symbolically closing their old rift. They joke about mortality and promise to see each other after surgery.
After Sadie leaves, Sam takes a last walk on his failing foot, notices a girl playing Dead Sea, and returns to reflect on his long grievance with Sadie, finally acknowledging deeper love and gratitude for her and Marx’s support. He places the crystal on his nightstand and sleeps, accepting what comes next.
A flashback traces Anna’s early L.A. years: fruitless auditions, a degrading encounter with game-show host Chip Willingham that nonetheless leads to a spokesmodel job, and local celebrity in Koreatown. Driving home with Sam, she tells him a legend about secret studio highways; swerving for a coyote, she stops without lights and is struck by another car. The crash kills Anna and crushes Sam’s left foot, leaving him mute until he later meets Sadie. Sam frames the tragedy like a game’s branching path: infinite ways she might have lived, and one path where she didn’t.
