CHAPTER XIX
Summary
- Mrs. Bennet was thrilled to have her two eldest daughters, Jane and Elizabeth, married to wealthy men, and often boasted about it. However, her character remained as nervous and silly as ever.
- Mr. Bennet deeply missed Elizabeth and often visited her at Pemberley, enjoying the unpredictability of his visits.
- Mr. Bingley and Jane lived at Netherfield for only a year, finding the proximity to her relations inconvenient. They bought an estate near Derbyshire, allowing Jane and Elizabeth to live within thirty miles of each other.
- Kitty notably improved by spending most of her time with Jane and Elizabeth, who provided her with better influences. She was kept away from Lydia's detrimental example.
- Mary remained at home, helping her mother and becoming more social, though she still retained her moralizing tendencies. She adjusted to her new circumstances without much resistance.
- Lydia and Wickham's behavior did not improve post-marriage. They struggled financially and frequently sought assistance from Jane and Elizabeth, often living beyond their means and moving from place to place.
- Elizabeth refused Lydia’s suggestion to ask Darcy for financial help for Wickham but occasionally supported them through her own frugal savings.
- Darcy, despite his disdain for Wickham, assisted him professionally for Elizabeth's sake, though Wickham was never welcomed at Pemberley. Lydia visited occasionally when Wickham was away, but her stays sometimes tested Bingley’s patience.
- Miss Bingley was upset by Darcy’s marriage to Elizabeth but feigned civility to maintain her relationship with Pemberley and became friendlier with Georgiana and Elizabeth.
- Georgiana formed a close bond with Elizabeth and was positively influenced by her personality. She learned to appreciate Elizabeth’s playful attitude toward Darcy and developed a deeper understanding of different social dynamics.
- Lady Catherine was initially outraged by Darcy’s marriage to Elizabeth and severed contact. However, at Elizabeth’s urging, Darcy reconciled with his aunt, who eventually visited Pemberley despite her initial disdain.
- The Gardiners continued to maintain a close and loving relationship with Elizabeth and Darcy, who appreciated the key role they played in bringing the couple together.
