Summary

• The protagonist, Violet, describes the uniforms of the riders and her living conditions in the first-year barracks of the dormitory building.
• The Captain concludes the roll call with Simone Casteneda's name and the squadron leaders start routing their squads to their daily activities.
• Violet interacts with her friends Rhiannon and Dain who tease her about adjusting to life in the academy.
• Dain reassures Violet that he would protect her against threats, especially from Xaden Riorson, who is said to want Violet dead, due to an issue he has with her mother.
• Violet runs into Xaden in the rotunda, who makes mock-insinuations about her relationship with Dain. Given Xaden's ill-intent towards Violet, Dain instructs her to run away.
