CHAPTER NINE
Summary
- The protagonist, Violet, is called to a practice fight against Xaden, a highly skilled and intimidating fighter.
- Despite her fears, Violet fights against Xaden, who seems to enjoy the challenge. Even though Xaden is much stronger and faster than Violet, he does not seriously hurt her.
- Xaden uses the match to demonstrate various tactics and strategies to Violet. This includes taking her blades from her in the fight to illustrate his superior skill and showing her where to aim for quick, fatal strikes on an enemy.
- Violet is angry and frustrated with Xaden's attitude, but is also drawn to him despite her best efforts.
- After the match, Violet's friend Dain expresses his concern for her safety and suggests she transfer to the Scribe Quadrant for her own protection.
- Dain tells Violet that he informed Colonel Markham of threats against Violet's life, and the Colonel agreed to allow her transfer. Dain warns Violet that during the upcoming Threshing, a dangerous and often deadly event, first-years often use the chaos to eliminate "liabilities".
- Violet is deeply conflicted by this news, uncertain if she should stay and fight or transfer to the Scribe Quadrant for her safety. She ultimately promises Dain that she will think about his proposal.
