Summary
- In 1943, Philipose is absent and his home, Parambil, is disrupted. Shamuel injures his ankle, a spirit in the house causes mischief, and infighting ensues between household members, particularly Decency Kochamma and Dolly Kochamma.
- Big Ammachi, feeling the absence of Philipose, reminisces about the good times they shared, particularly his nightly readings and his enthusiasm for knowledge.
