Summary
- A strong north wind is blowing and causing a storm in Queenstown
- People in the town prepare for the storm by closing windows and doors and moving to more solid buildings
- Some ships are anchored in the harbor to weather the storm
- Struan and his family take shelter in an abandoned building of the Noble House
- Culum and Tess take shelter in the residence of the port captain
- Glessing is upset about an article criticizing the port of Hong Kong
- Glessing believes that Hong Kong must be kept at any cost and that the British fleet is safe there
- Tess and Culum visit Struan and Glessing and offer to share tea with them
- Tess is wearing a necklace with precious stones given to her by Culum, which contains twenty sovereigns from Brock.
