Chapter 40

Summary

• Gorth enters a club in an angry state and searches for Struan
• Gorth accuses Struan of planning Culum's marriage to Tess and hiding Culum's syphilis
• Gorth attacks Struan with a whip and Struan fights back, drawing a knife
• Struan wounds Gorth and Gorth runs away
• Struan follows Gorth to his ship and demands that he leave Hong Kong
• Gorth eventually agrees and Struan returns to the club
• May-May is sick with fever and experiencing pain in her uterus, but eventually recovers
• The priest promises to keep what he sees and hears in the house secret and gives May-May an infusion made with cinchona bark
• Ah Sam is told to watch the infusion and make sure no one touches it
• Struan leaves to handle business and the priest stays with May-May
• When Struan returns, the priest tells him that May-May needs to rest and should not be disturbed
• The priest gives Struan a list of items to buy for May-May's recovery
• Struan leaves to get the items on the list and Ah Sam gives May-May the infusion
• May-May recovers and the baby is born healthy
• Struan is relieved and grateful to the priest
