Summary
- May-May is weak and vulnerable with a high fever and is delirious for four hours
- Struan tries to comfort May-May, but she does not hear or recognize him
- The fever passes and May-May falls into a deep sleep
- When May-May wakes up, she is tired but relieved and reassures Struan that she will recover
- Struan has anxious dreams and when he wakes up, May-May is better
- Struan and May-May talk and Struan leaves to attend to business
- When Struan returns, May-May is awake and they talk more
- Struan is worried about May-May, but she reassures him
- Struan visits the bishop at his residence and discusses business in Hong Kong
- The bishop expresses his opinion on the future of Hong Kong and requests Struan's help in obtaining funding for a new cathedral
- Struan agrees to consider the bishop's request and the bishop offers to mediate between Struan and the Chinese authorities
- Struan accepts the bishop's offer and the bishop warns him about the dangers of angering the Chinese people
