Chapter 16
Summary
- Struan is waiting at designated spot near village and has placed three lanterns on rocks by a well
- Struan wonders if Wu Kwok's men will come from village, boats, or hills
- Struan can't hear what men near beach are saying and hears dog bark in village, but can't spot anything out of the ordinary
- Struan happy to be back on island and that May-May and children are safe in small house he had built for them in Valle Feliz
- House has strong walls, recently finished, made of brick with stone fireplace and wooden roof, papered rooms with painted rocks, windows and doors that open onto central courtyard with well and lavatory, dining room, living room, bedroom, kitchen with stove and sink, several closets, no servants yet, interior furnished but exterior not yet finished
- Struan waiting for Wu Kwok, who he thinks will come to ask for a favor
- Scragger introduces Struan to three children: Wu Pak Chuk, Fred, and Bert
- Wu Pak Chuk is grandson of Wu Fang Choi, not related to Wu Kwok; Fred and Bert are Scragger's children, but Wu Pak Chuk not related to him
- Struan offers to take children and educate them as aristocrats in exchange for a favor from Scragger
- Scragger agrees and Struan takes children with him
