Chapter 32
Summary
- Struan goes to the Calcuta-Maharajah to visit Sarah and gives her an order for payment for 5,000 guineas
- Sarah is bitter towards Struan and says she does not want anything from him and will manage her own money well
- Sarah also says she is old and ugly, and curses Struan, wishing to live long enough to spit on his grave
- Struan tells Sarah that her bitterness comes from believing she chose the worse of two brothers and that he will always protect her and her son
- Gordon is worried about the mandarines acting on the Tongs in Kwantung, Macao, and Tai Ping Shan and fears for his life if it is discovered he is the head Tong in Hong Kong
- Gordon is also distracted by the scent of May-May and the attractiveness of Ah Sam and thinks about sleeping with the slave but decides it could be dangerous unless suggested by May-May
- Ah Sam reveals to Gordon and May-May that the son of one of Gordon's political relatives frequently goes to a brothel and beats and tortures the women before having sex with them.
