Bugatti and Blondie
Summary
- Tova used to go on picnics to Hamilton Park with her son Erik.
- Now she goes to the park alone to be away from her silent house.
- While she's working on a crossword at the park, Tova encounters a man preparing to drink from a non-functioning drinking fountain and offers him a bottle of water from her bag.
- The man helps her solve a few clues, revealing in their conversation that he knows Tova's son, Erik Sullivan, who has passed away.
- Tova, shocked and filled with unasked questions, watches as the man, Adam Wright, leaves. She wonders whether he was one of those who attended the vigil held for Erik at his school.
- Back at home, she deals with another painful reminder of her past: a flannel bathrobe that belonged to her estranged, deceased brother Lars. It was returned to her by his nurse, along with a stack of old and recent photographs.
- Tova files old photographs of herself and Lars into an album in her attic and discards recent ones featuring the unfamiliar aspects of Lars's life.
- There's one photograph of Lars and Erik together on a sailboat which is painful for Tova to look at. Instead of throwing it away, she stores it in a kitchen drawer.
