A Three-Martini Truth
Overview
At Mary Ann’s farewell luncheon, Tova’s plan to sell her house and move to Charter Village is revealed, shocking her friends. The event turns pivotal when Adam, an old friend of Erik’s, recalls Erik planning to impress a girl right before he disappeared.
Shaken by this new lead, Tova departs, reconsidering what she thought she knew about Erik’s final days.
Summary
Tova arrives early for Mary Ann Minetti’s farewell luncheon at the Elland Chophouse, nursing a tender ankle and quietly avoiding questions about the sucker marks on her arm. Laura, Mary Ann’s daughter, helps her in and asks about Tova’s aquarium plans, and Tova explains she’ll return to mentor the new hire before moving to Charter Village.
Guests gather, including Barb Vanderhoof, Janice and Peter Kim, and a genial server, Omar. Adam Wright, whom Tova previously met in the park, arrives with his partner, Sandy Hewitt. Amid light chatter about baseball and house hunting, Sandy casually reveals that Tova’s home has been listed, unintentionally exposing Tova’s plan to sell her father’s house and relocate.
The Knit-Wits react with shock and concern, questioning the fate of Tova’s belongings and urging alternatives. Tova firmly asserts her independence and declines Janice’s offer to live with them, ending the flurry of judgments.
As the luncheon winds down, Adam makes a clumsy comment about aging alone, then apologizes to Tova and shares a vivid memory: the last time he saw Erik, they ate nachos before Erik’s shift, and Erik planned to visit a cabin the next day, bringing beers to impress a girl he was seeing.
Tova, who believed Erik had no girlfriend then, is rattled by this detail. She leaves abruptly, sits in her car, and realizes that Will’s long-held suspicion was right—there had been a girl connected to Erik’s final days.
