Not a Movie Star, But Maybe a Pirate

Cameron fails to rent an apartment from Old Al, who reveals Daphne once ran away to Washington. Searching Sowell Bay High’s 1989 archives, Cameron finds a photo linking Daphne to wealthy developer Simon Brinks and seizes on him as his likely father. Focused on money over kinship, Cameron books a predawn flight to Seattle.
Summary
At nine a.m., Cameron visits Dell’s Saloon to pitch renting the vacant upstairs apartment. Old Al refuses, citing Cameron’s debts and past “performance art” damage. When Cameron produces a bag of jewelry, Old Al notices a Sowell Bay High, Class of 1989 ring and recalls that Cameron’s aunt once had to retrieve Daphne after she ran away to Washington. Suggesting the ring could be a boyfriend’s, he softens with a free beer as the day crew arrives, and Cameron leaves.
Spurred by the lead, Cameron scours the Class of 1989 reunion pages and yearbook scans. He notes “EELS” engraved inside the ring and finds a pier photo captioned “Daphne Cassmore and Simon Brinks.” A search reveals Brinks is a prominent, wealthy Seattle developer and nightclub owner. Spotting spring flowers in the photo and comparing dates to his February 2 birth, Cameron judges the timing plausible and imagines Brinks as his father.
In the kitchen, Cameron tells Elizabeth. She questions the proof, urges caution, and asks whether he wants a relationship; Cameron prioritizes back child support over bonding. They remember childhood fantasies of his father as a pirate or movie star, toast “unsolved mysteries,” and Elizabeth calls the trip an adventure.
Unable to sleep, Cameron downloads a travel app and books a five a.m. JoyJet flight from Sacramento to Seattle. He hastily packs his green duffel with clothes and the jewelry, determined that if Simon Brinks is his father, he will pay for the thirty years he missed.
