Not Even a Birthday Card
Summary
- Cameron is mopping the building and feeling disappointed when Tova arrives nearly an hour late. He's been feeling lonely after an argument with Ethan about a spreading rumor involving a bad check.
- Tova tells Cameron a long story about her Grateful Dead memorabilia purchase and complications at a warehouse, seemingly flustered and flushed more than usual. Cameron offers to help her set up an email.
- Cameron mentions that having a smartphone would make keeping in touch easier, especially when she moves away. Tova's face stiffens at this remark, and Cameron becomes unsure as he was aware from Ethan that she was planning on moving.
- Tova apologizes for not getting a chance to say hello at Ethan's house, and denies the fact that she had a date with him. She mentions she was married for forty-seven years before her husband passed away and admits that she cannot date.
- While cleaning, they discover Cameron's lost driver's license under a statue. Tova grows suspicious and asks Cameron the name of his mother, revealing it to be Daphne Cassmore. Tova shockingly reveals that Daphne was involved with her son, Erik.
- Tova then tells Cameron the story of how Erik went missing after a night at the ferry dock, and how she discovered that he might have been seeing a girl his friends weren't aware of. She admits that she doesn't know whether Cameron's mother was involved in Erik's disappearance, but she was seeing him and might be able to provide more information.
- Cameron reveals that he hasn't heard from his mother since he was nine years old, and although he considers the possibility of Tova being related to him, he dismisses it.
- Tova apologizes for everything, putting her hand on Cameron's shoulder as a comforting gesture. Cameron apologizes about Erik and for the possibility that his mother might be involved in Erik's disappearance.
- When Cameron gets home, Ethan's lights are out, so he doesn't get a chance to discuss things. He receives a text from his friend Avery about meeting up for a paddle and agrees to meet her on Wednesday afternoon.
