Day 1,319 of My Captivity
Summary
- The narrator finds a key near where his captor stores her things. He is entranced by it and takes the key.
- He hides it in a secret stash in his tank, where he keeps various other items he has acquired during his captivity.
- His collection includes: three marbles, two plastic superheroes, an emerald ring, four credit cards, a driver’s license, a barrette, a human tooth, many single earrings, three bracelets, two pacifiers, and many coins and keys.
- He no longer collects coins or keys unless they're unique or foreign, as they have become too commonplace.
- Later that night, the narrator realizes that he has seen a copy of the found key before. He had found it attached to a ring on the ocean floor, among a bunch of human belongings, before his capture.
- He deduces that the key and the rest of the belongings must have belonged to the person his captor is mourning.
- He deeply misses his freedom and being able to explore the sea. If he could go back, he would've taken the entire collection of belongings, including the original key, for his captor.
- He empathizes with the loss his captor is experiencing and intends to return the key to her.
