Nora is given a book by Mrs. Elm in the Midnight Library that sends her into a life in America.
In this life, she is called Nora Martínez and is married to Eduardo, a Mexican-American man they met during her imagined gap year.
Eduardo inherited some money after his parents died in a boating accident and they used it to buy a small vineyard in California, which within three years expanded to include a neighboring vineyard due to their successful Syrah wines.
Their business is mainly fueled by wine-trail tourists who come for wine-tasting sessions. Nora picks up on how to entertain and educate these tourists about their wines.
Nora and Eduardo have a child named Alejandro, who is at a boarding school near Monterey Bay.
Eduardo and Nora lead a comfortable and affluent existence, with Nora reflecting on her perfect Californian appearance.
Despite the contentment, Nora suspects that their relationship is superficial because they can go without conversation for a long time.
Nora has a moment of introspection and enjoys a glass of wine under the stars after the tourists have left. She questions if they’re truly happy, to which Eduardo affirms.
Eduardo leaves Nora alone under the stars and she walks through their vineyard. While this life seems perfect, she feels a persistent desire for other lives, other possibilities.
Nora closes her eyes, awaiting the transition back to the Midnight Library, implying that she doesn't want to settle in this life.
