Summary
In the tunnels, Fadrique approaches Vis with reverence, recognizing him as the lost prince of Suus. Vis challenges Fadrique’s apparent collaboration, and Fadrique explains he accepted the Sextus role under the Hierarchy to protect their people, even setting Imbued alarms on the hidden doors. Tension eases as Vis acknowledges the burden of Fadrique’s choices and forbids kneeling, admitting the monarchy is gone.
Fadrique then reveals that Quartus Latani, called Suusicus—the man who led the assault and ordered the executions—is currently on the island. He offers to arrange justice, but Vis refuses, noting it would lead to Fadrique’s execution in a Sapper and harm Suus. When Vis asks how his family died, Fadrique gently confirms they were hanged together; Princess Carinza’s body was found two days later, meaning Vis’s parents could believe she and Vis had escaped. Vis breaks down in grief, then regains composure.
Fadrique leads Vis to a secret chamber where he has preserved artifacts from the royal family: Vis’s mother’s carved bow, childhood toys, books, instruments, and Vis’s Foundation board. Overwhelmed, Vis thanks him and pockets a few old coins as mementos. Fadrique explains he had help from friends and emphasizes that Vis still has allies on Suus.
They talk through the night. Fadrique recounts the immediate riots after the executions, the Hierarchy’s suppression via Sappers, proscription, and the population’s reluctant acclimation to Will-driven changes. He asks about the naumachia; Vis admits he stopped the Anguis to save thousands, earning Fadrique’s quiet approval. Discussing the mission, Fadrique notes the ‘fortunate’ alignment of Vis’s arrival and access to the tunnels, prompting Vis to infer that someone like Estevan, as Melior, likely informed Relucia, enabling the operation without exposing the tunnels outright.
They briefly discuss Emissa, with Fadrique assuring Vis that love is not betrayal. They reminisce about pre-conquest days, sharing stories that bring both laughter and tears. At dawn, Fadrique asks what Vis will do about Latani, and Vis answers, “Violence is no answer to grief.” They part with mutual respect and affection, and Fadrique offers safe harbor should Vis ever need it.
