Chapter 20
Summary
- Livira chases a raven which possesses a map that she worked hard on.
- The raven, though injured, manages to stay ahead and leads Livira to a familiar spot in the library, seeming to focus on a specific bookshelf.
- Livira realizes that the raven wants her to reattach a page she had previously torn from a book found on that particular shelf. She complies, yet the raven attacks her and unearths a text-covered scrap from her pocket.
- The raven then leads her back to the library clearing, seemingly wanting her to return the scrap from her pocket.
- Livira follows the raven through a door which only opens to the raven's touch, and into a third chamber of the library which feels foreign and is filled with books written in unfamiliar languages.
- Eventually, they arrive at an aisle filled with complete darkness. The raven enters without hesitating, but Livira tentatively steps in and out, panicking when she momentarily believes herself to be blind.
- The raven calls to her from the darkness and she decides to follow, imagining all sorts of horrors looming in the invisible space but still pressing on.
- Lost in the darkness, Livira bumps into bookshelves and eventually stumbles upon a small black book, the pages of which emit an impenetrable darkness when opened. Realizing that the darkness surrounding her disappears once the book is closed, Livira accuses the raven of wasting her time.
- She decides to borrow the entire book, seemingly evading the raven's ire towards those who damage books, and continues to follow the bird further into the library.
