Chapter 6
Summary
- Livira and her fellow settlers enter Crath City. This is their first experience in a populated area.
- The city-dwellers treat Livira and her group with disdain, pushing them aside and spitting at them.
- Livira contemplates running away but decides to stay with the group due to fear and lack of knowledge about the city.
- The group, led by Malar, eventually make their way to a water trough. They drink eagerly, despite Malar urging them to sip slowly to avoid sickness.
- After the group has finished drinking, Malar leads them to a building where people are gathered. He explains that these are the people who decide their fate in the city.
- Livira is pushed into a water trough by Malar as punishment for her numerous questions. After this, Malar gives Livira a black cloak and insists she puts it on, suggesting it will give her a better job and life than the others.
- Livira follows Malar to the door that is meant for middle-class individuals. She notes the hierarchy and different treatment given to different classes of individuals.
- An old man in robes allows Livira to enter the large, significant building. A man named Hendron tells Livira to go through a door and wish her good luck.
- Livira is able to enter the city with a higher status due to sneaky actions by Malar and unique circumstances.
- Livira hesitates to admit her lack of understanding of the words she just repeated which were initially spoken by the sabber.
- Instead of confessing her ignorance, Livira gives her interpretation of the words, stating, "I declared war."
