Chapter 54

Summary

• The chapter "Livira" is mainly focused on the character Livira and her companions trying to survive a Sabber attack on a library complex. Livira is concerned about Yute, who reveals that he is married to the head librarian and trusts that she'll be safe from the attack. Yute asks Livira to meet him at the library door.
• To Livira's horror, the complex becomes a scene of slaughter as they encounter numerous bodies of those who were unable to escape the attack. Amongst the carnage, she discovers the bodies of key characters including Deputy Ellis, Mastri, and Heeth Logaris.
• Malar, another character, fights off a Sabber with rudimentary weapons whilst Livira, Jella, Arpix and Meelan manage to stay hidden through a magical darkness conjured by a book.
• Livira notes that the Sabbers left bloody footprints, indicating that they had incurred wounds, preceding a critical altercation with the Sabbers. The children suggest that the Sabbers were accompanied by a human who looked like Livira.
• Upon finally reaching the library, the survivors find Yute and Yamala waiting for them. Surprisingly, Yute seems unfazed by the arrival of the Sabbers, stating that there are certain doors in the library that only members of different species can open. He says, in this case, the Sabbers had a human with them to help gain access.
• Livira is further disturbed by the fact that a human child raised among the Sabbers was used to unlock forbidden parts of the library. Her findings suggest potential ethical abuses relating to the powers vested in controlling access to the library. She contemplates the consequences if this information were to be made public.
• Yamala leads the survivors deeper into the library to seek shelter from the attack. The chapter ends with Yute reassuring Livira about the safety of another character, Wentworth, amidst the ongoing Sabber attack.
