Chapter 22
Summary
- In the chapter, Livira and the raven are in search of a particular book in an expansive library.
- The raven shows signs of exhaustion, but continues guiding Livira to a specific book, which is large, heavy, and locked.
- Livira becomes frustrated by her inability to open the book with the keyhole, and questions the concept of locking up knowledge.
- She attempts to wedge a torn scrap of paper, originating from the book, back into it but is unsuccessful. Following the raven’s insistent squawks, she begrudgingly decides to carry the book with her.
- The raven leads her away from their original path and Livira contemplates crushing it under the book to cease its annoying noises. She resists as it is ancient and possesses intelligence.
- Along their journey, Livira notices an unusual object on the library floor that looks like a person made of stone. The stone figure has her hand outstretched towards a shimmering, lighted circle.
- The figure is beautifully crafted, but has a wound on her head. The raven pecks at the figure as if mourning.
- Livira suspects the circle of light could be leading to a hidden passage in the library, but is cautious. She uses a special book that turns everything black so that if she is chased she can evade her pursuer by knowing to turn left.
- Livira reaches into the lighted circle, where her hand meets resistance. Suddenly, another hand takes hold of hers and pulls her into the light.
