Chapter 62
Summary
- Evar and Livira came out of a pool to a scene that remained unchanged from an altercation between Clovis and Yute. A tense atmosphere lay heavy on the group with potential for violence to erupt.
- Livira is looking for some friends and Evar saw a silent interaction between Malar and Clovis, suggesting a deeper relationship.
- Two female refugees recognize Livira, but react in fear to Evar's presence, leading to some refugee men pointing guns at him. Livira intervenes to protect Evar, revealing he saved Malar's life.
- Livira introduces her old friends, Neera and Katrin, to Evar and mentions there are others coming. Evar offers an apology, sympathizing with their displacement due to actions of his species.
- While talking to her friends, Livira anxiously looks for others she expected through the portal, including Arpix, Jella, Meelan, and Salamonda. She then approached Serra Leetar, whose brother is also expected.
- Livira tells Leetar that Meelan was with her but can't understand why he hasn't arrived yet. They share an emotional moment, fearing the worst for those not yet arrived.
- Livira plans to go back for the missing people via the dying portal. But Evar and Malar are not optimistic, explaining the likely mortal danger in trying to rescue people in a place where they can't survive.
- Even though Evar warns Livira that she may only find their bodies if she goes back, she insists on trying, wanting to be certain of their fate. This conversation garners attention of Yute, Clovis and everyone else.
- Livira approaches Yute and informs him of her decision to go back. Yute confirms that the passage of time can be slowed in the woods they are in.
- Yute and Livira share a mutual respect, with Yute giving her advice on a special book that she must guard, as its story intertwines with the Exchange, a place where creatures in time's flow were never intended to tread.
- Livira assures Yute of her return and asks Yamala to look after him, while stating her intentions to Malar and Evar, and carving a path towards the portal through the refugees. She realizes that the refugees outnumber the civilians and seem to be restrained only by the uncertainty about others of their kind in the forest.
