Chapter 38

Summary

• Livira, Meelan, and their guide, Malar, make their way into Crath City, discussing philosophies about life, war, and wealth.
• They spot illuminated campsites beyond the city's walls, which Malar explains are from dangerous sabber soldiers who have infiltrated the city in small groups.
• Upon reaching their destination, Livira is taken by surprise to see it's a royal palace and not a library as she expected. She's also surprised to see King Oanold in person.
• As a ceremony progresses inside the palace, Livira learns that Meelan's sister, Leetar, is being appointed as a junior diplomat. The realisation of Meelan's true social status shocks Livira.
• Two alchemists are also appointed during the ceremony, but Livira is too absorbed in her own worries to fully pay attention. She begins to worry she might be publicly expelled from her service at the library due to her lower social standing.
• Yute, the Master, surprises Livira by standing and presenting her to King Oanold as a new junior librarian. Livira feels both fear and determination in the face of her uncertain future.
