Chapter 44

Summary

• In "Temptation: A Novel in Three Parts," Livira and Arpix hide a book called The Forest Between before trying to locate Volente, the library guide. They hope Volente will lead them to Chamber Seven of the library.
• Despite repeated calls from both Livira and Arpix, Volente ignores their commands until Arpix speaks in a firm, loud voice.
• Livira and Arpix intend for Volente to open the door to Chamber Seven, but Volente merely walks through the door, leaving it closed behind him.
• Livira tries to instruct Volente to fetch a book from Chamber Seven, but since she doesn't know the names of any specific books, her command is unsuccessful.
• Livira then instructs Volente to fetch "the Raven," a librarian who could potentially help their cause. However, Volente leads them to an immobile metal man known as the guide.
• When Volente barks at the guide loudly, he surprisingly comes to life after centuries of inactivity.
• The guide speaks in many different languages before finally speaking in a language Livira and Arpix understand - sabber-tongue.
• Using sabber-tongue, Livira asks for the Raven's name. The guide replies, "Edgarallen."
• Livira calls out "Edgarallen" and the Raven appears. He then helps them gain entrance to Chamber Seven.
• Upon entering Chamber Seven, they feel relief at not seeing the dangerous, corrupted assistant, but fear still looms.
