Chapter 30
Summary
- The chapter starts off with a greenish-yellow cloud of poison pouring from a laboratory, making it difficult for Livira, Arpix and Malar to breathe.
- Livira tries to think of a way out. She crawls towards a fountain and uses her wet clothing to filter the air she breathes in, letting her survive the poisonous gases filling the courtyard.
- Livira tries to save Arpix and Malar, who have also been affected by the poison. They manage to pull through and the poison cloud eventually dissipitates.
- Alchemists emerged from the laboratory wearing protective masks. They give Livira, Arpix, and Malar a mixture to inhale which helps them recover from the poison.
- Livira reveals to Arpix that she knew how to survive the poison because she had read about it in a book before.
- The three are eventually taken to see Hiago Abdalla, who scolds them for delivering a "war" to his laboratory's doorstep, alluding to the poison incident.
- Abdalla implies that the poison was deliberately released by one of his apprentices who has now disappeared. Livira counters his accusations, explaining that they didn't mean to cause any trouble and that it was one of Abdalla's apprentices who almost killed them.
- They are eventually released from the laboratory and discuss the incident and their own historical knowledge as they head back to the library.
- Livira postulates that mankind's history is cyclical, going "from dust to dust visiting the heights in between," hinting at the repeated rise and fall of powerful civilizations.
